Researchers have recently been dealt a blow in their battle against breast cancer, because a bone drug they were hoping could prevent the disease has failed in a new study. For more information on the outcome of the study, and a great breast cancer awareness video, keep on reading after the jump.

Just when researchers thought they had made a break through, a new study has shown that a common bone drug is not as effective in preventing breast cancer as they had previously thought.

Researchers were hopeful that new tests of the bone drug Zometa, which is in a class of bone drugs known as bisphosphorates, would confirm previous results that when given to women who have been treated for breast cancer, the bone drug would significantly reduce the risk of spread or recurrences. However, it has fallen surprising short of expectations.

In a 2009 study that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that women who were given the drug post treatment were a third less likely to redevelop their cancer or significantly reduce the risk of the disease spreading. The new five-year study shows that women who were given the drug did not have any less chance of redeveloping their cancer than women who were not given the bone drug.

Zometa has long been approved to prevent fractures and other bone problems in people who were suffering from bone tumors, and the new finding are disappointing to researchers who hoped it would be a key to saving lives from breast cancer.

However, since the study was geared towards young women in early cancer stages, scientists are still hopefully that future studies will show that it can be helpful to women experiencing menopause or perimenopause.

Since other studies into the effectiveness of the drug as a breast cancer prevention are still underway or planned for the future, researchers are still holding out hope that the Zometa bone drug will make a difference in the fight against this devastating disease.
