Looking for a great, yet easy side dish to serve with a meal or just a sandwich? Try sauerkraut! Long under-rated, it is quite delicious if cooked right. Give this old recipe a try…don’t worry about the caraway seeds if you’re out of them. I actually prefer this recipe without, but others enjoy the caraway flavor. You’re in the kitchen it’s your call!

You will need:
Medium skillet

1 Tbs butter or margarine
1 large can or bag Sauerkraut
1 large onion, diced small
2 apples, peeled and sliced thin

About 2 tablespoons of brown sugar (or to taste )
1/2 tsp caraway seeds ( optional )
dash garlic salt ( optional )

Rinse and drain sauerkraut in colander
Place sauerkraut in crockpot.
Melt butter in skillet and saute onion and apple together. Add spices if using.
When done, add to sauerkraut and stir well.
Cover and cook on low for 4-6 hours.
Stir occasionally. Sauerkraut should be light brown when done.
Serve and enjoy!

Simmer slowly til the sauerkraut is nearly all light brown, stiring occasionally.
