A passenger aboard Northwest Airlines flight 253 attempted to blow up the plane as it descended in Detroit, Michigan this afternoon.

The plane landed safely but several people suffered injuries, including one person taken to University of Michigan (U of M) hospital in Ann Arbor. That persons status and gender are not publicly know at this time.

The Delta Airbus A330 wide-body jet, inbound from Amsterdam, had 278 passengers aboard when the incident occurred. (Delta and Northwest have merged) . It was originally believed that someone had set off firecrackers.

The suspect is believed to be a 23 year old Nigerian national with a possible al-Qaeda affiliation. Delta Air Lines spokeswoman Susan Elliott stated the suspect was immediately subdued but declined to say by whom. She is referring all inquiries to the FBI.

Syed Jafri, a passenger sitting three rows behind the suspect said he noticed a glow, smelled smoke and that another passenger jumped on the suspect. According to Jafri, “next thing you know, there was a lot of panic”.

The suspect suffered second degree burns when the explosives went off in his lap. He allegedly told authorities he was connected to Al-Qaeda but the veracity of that statement has not been confirmed. At this time, it’s believed the explosives and instructions on how and when to use them were acquired in Yemen.

White House spokesman Bill Burton said Barack Obama was notified at his residence in Hawaii.

“He asked to arrange a subsequent secure call and in that call instructed that all appropriate measures be taken to increase security for air travel. The President is actively monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates.”

We might be seeing additional screening measures due to this incident, according to our Homeland Security Department, “We encourage those with future travel plans to stay in touch with their airline and to visit www.tsa.gov for updates.”

I would like to know why we aren’t already seeing additional screening! This should never been allowed to happen. This was a predictable event, yet it occurred. Thank God for this Christmas miracle!

Northwest / Delta flight 253 with 278 passengers came too close to being another successful terrorist attack. We’ve been warned for years now that these terrorists will not give up; that we will be attacked, but our nation has let it’s guard down since President Bush left office.
