Mornay sauce is basically a simple white sauce with cheese and spices added. It makes a delicious topping for everything from lobster to eggs. It really livens up most vegetables, too. Give it a try!
You will need:
- Medium sauce pan
- Wooden spoon
- 4 Tbsp butter
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- 1 1/2 cup cream (may use light)
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1/4 tsp of salt/pepper combo
- 2/3 cup grated Swiss or Gruyère cheese
- Optional: Just a pinch of nutmeg, mixed in with salt and pepper
Melt the butter on low. Mix cornstarch with a dab of cream in a small bowl or measuring cup. Add to melted butter along with the rest of the cream.
Stir over medium low heat until thick and smooth, then add cheese and stir/whisk until melted. Add lemon. Serve over vegetables, seafood, eggs … almost anything that can use a creamy topping! Enjoy!
